Is it more than just a pulled back muscle?

Is it more than just a pulled back muscle? - Blog - Ezcape Spa & Wellness, Orleans, ON

There are many different causes of low back pain.

Sometimes we lift something that is too heavy and we strain our low back muscles. This can cause severe pain and lack of movement. The pain can even travel down the buttocks into the legs with a severe strain. For this scenario rest is definitely needed and usually a person can recover on his or her own. But what if the heavy lifting caused more damage and instead of just a strained low back muscle there is a herniated disc involved. A herniated disc is much more serious and can cause long-term impairments. What occurs with a herniated disc is the soft center of the disc balloons outwards putting pressure on the surrounding nerves. This can cause severe pain sometimes burning pain that can travel down the leg and cause difficulty walking, sitting and laying down.

How do you know the difference between a strained back muscle and a disc injury?

A Chiropractor is trained to screen his or her patients for red flags that indicate a disc injury. There are many different orthopedic tests and muscle strength tests that help the Chiropractor determine if a disc is involved. It is very important to treat the disc injury properly. If gone unnoticed the injured person can suffer with pain for a long time. Chiropractic has been shown to be quite effective along with specific exercises to help recover from a disc injury. In some cases, surgery was even avoided.
